HELLO EVERYONE! WHAT WE’RE GOING TO BE DOING OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS OR SO, IS POSTING ABOUT EACH OF OUR FAVORITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME (THE TOP 5 TO BE SPECIFIC/ 1 PERSON PER WEEK) AND A BIT ABOUT WHY WE LOVE THEM. WE HOPE IT’LL LET YOU LEARN MORE ABOUT ALL OF US HERE AT STICKERFRIDGE IN DOING SO. THIS WEEK IS BRIAN MENARD!
Jaws is my all time favorite movie. It’s a straight up masterpiece and somehow it’s rated PG even though a kid and a dog die in it. There is so much to love in this movie! The ultra dramatic dolly zoom, the classic soundtrack, awesome scene on the boat where the guys compare scars, and the shark! This movie is so special that you can actually see a real shooting star in one of the shots! I watch Jaws at least once every summer and so should you.
Oh, and just because it blows my mind take a look at the end credits the next time you see this movie, they are shockingly short. I think something like 40-50 names scroll through and that’s it! It’s quite shocking to see these days in comparison to the miles of credits in most Marvel movies.
If Jaws is my summer tradition The Shining is my Halloween equivalent. Legendary director Stanley Kubrick has crafted a terrifyingly creepy, uncomfortable classic. Jack Nicholson’s performance in this movies is downright unhinged; it will give you nightmares. And if you like the move check out the conspiracy theorist documentary Room 237 as a companion piece. If you think hotels are scary this movie is for you.
In another life I would have been a wildlife documentarian. I seriously watch ocean documentaries almost every weekend and when I’m making movies with Sticker Fridge documentaries are what enjoy making most. Blackfish is one of the most powerful and impactful documentaries I have even seen. It’s a great example of how documentaries can be a force for change and its why I love the medium. If you haven’t seen it yet you are missing out.
NAUSICAA OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND
I had to have one animated movie on this list and Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaa takes the cake for me. This is the first movie he wrote and directed and is the movie that launched Studio Ghibli. Miyazaki and Ghibli have a beautiful and uniquely unmistakable animation style that I fell in love with the very first time I saw it. Miyazaki has some fantastic films but this one is my favorite. It’s the story of a young warrior princess who fights to prevent two warring nations from destroying the planet. It’s set in a post-apocalyptic world full of jet gliders and toxic jungles crawling with giant insects. I recommend this movie to everyone, even those who don’t really like anime. Miyazaki and Ghibli have an animation style in a league of their own.
THE DARK KNIGHT
In a world dominated by superhero movies The Dark Knight is the gold standard. I would be surprised if anyone ever makes a more perfect superhero movie. Christopher Nolan has put together one of the best casts ever. Heath Ledger’s deranged performance as The Joker is brilliant and even career-defining. Add in Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Morgan Freeman and you get the best Batman movie ever made. This movie gets everything right. From the opening bank robbery scene to the kickass battle for the soul of Gotham, this movie is relentless. It does something no other superhero movie seems to be able to do, it has stakes. Stakes that feel real to the audience. Stakes that force the hero to make impactful choices. The Dark Knight is full of all the spectacle you could want, and with its philosophical themes this movie will hold up for years to come.
