Director Showdown

Director Showdown is an idea that came about after months of intense arguments between Brent Carroll and Adam Daufen about which famous director was better: Steven Spielberg or Stanley Kubrick? Every week, they get together to watch a film they picked from each director and make their cases.

Dealer’s Choice: Spy Kids 4: All The Time in the World

Dealer’s Choice: Spy Kids 4: All The Time in the World

“Do you think God lives in Heaven because He too lives in fear of what He created?” This quote by Steve Buscemi as his memorable turn as Dr. Romero in ‘Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams’ sums up how Adam and Brent feel about this Dealer’s Choice competition. What began as a light-hearted way to connect to fans of the podcast and allow them to interact with us in fun and unpredictable ways has already reaped consequences we never could have predicted. Gus has used his unchecked powers to pick ‘Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World’ to podcast. Existence is pain. Life is meaningless. Art is a lie. Thank you for listening, and don’t forget to rate, review and subscribe on iTunes!

P.S. This will be the last episode for a little while why Adam and Brent start recording next season, so GET HYPED because up next is:

NOLAN V FINCHER, BABYYYY

P.S.2. We are aware that Jessica Alba was in ‘Into the Blue’ and not ‘Blue Crush’, sorry to all the Alba-heads out there for the mistake!

Adam and Brent are talking ‘Big Trouble in Little China’ with returning friend of the show Brian Menard! Brian watched the movie (basically) for the first time, so the guys enjoy unpacking his first impressions. Aside from that, they discuss the origins of such a strange and unique movie, Carpenter’s inability to capture box office success in the 80’s, and the surprising ‘wokeness’ of Big Trouble. They also discuss how amazing Kurt Russell is in every movie he’s in. It’s another fun episode of Director Showdown, so make sure you remember to rate, review and subscribe on whatever platform you choose, and thanks so much for listening!

Adam and Brent are joined by returning favorite ‘John Casares’ to talk one of Cronenberg’s most vital and idiosyncratic films, Videodrome! The fellas talk about the many layers of Videodrome, weigh the benefits of successful cynical film-making, and Adam makes a very dumb joke (for the first time ever!). They talk about the many layers (donkey) of the film, the challenges of making it, and the unfortunate box office life upon release. Scanners

Adam and Brent talk the first Cronenberg movie of the season with his 1981 body horror thriller ‘Scanners’! Among the various tangents, they talk about the magic of Michael Ironside, get scanned by painter-turned-temporary-actor Stephen Lack and the amazing/disgusting effects that define many of Cronenberg’s works. It’s a bit of a different format for this one, as the guys go beat-by-beat through the film and talk their favorite, mind-blowing moments. Don’t forget to tell your friends about the podcast, rate, review, and subscribe!

Escape from New York

Escape from New York

Adam and Brent are back, and this time they’re talking John Carpenter and David Cronenberg by kicking it off with ‘Escape from New York! This season, the guys are keeping things strictly 80’s, as they follow the filmographies of two of the decades most influential artists. The guys kick things off by talking about their histories with each director, create the genre ‘slimepunk’ and talk a lot about the 80’s in film! If you enjoy the podcast, pass it along to a friend, and don’t forget to rate, review, and subscribe on iTunes, Stitcher, or wherever you get your podcasts!

It’s the final bonus episode of the season as the boys watch ‘Super Mario Bros’! Friend of the podcast John Casares returns to discuss his pick in the new bonus episode competition ‘Director Showdown Roulette’. The guys talk about converting Mario into a film, some deep Mario lore, and possible ideas to successfully adapt video games to film (your welcome Hollywood). It’s an extra length episode, and unfortunately, the last one from us for a little bit (while we bank up episodes for next season amidst our increasingly busy lives).

Again, we thank you all for listening to our most popular season yet, and make sure to tell your friends about Director Showdown, rate, review, and subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts! We’ll see you guys soon!

Bonus Ep: We went to the movies!

Bonus Ep: We went to the movies!

It’s the first bonus episode of Season 4 and we’re joined by the Menard brothers (Sean and Brian) to talk a few experiences we had watching ‘Close Encounter of the Third Kind’, ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ and ‘Book of Henry’ (those first two on the big screen!) It’s a bit of a ‘fam films-one-off-crossover, unlike any bonus episode we’ve had before, but we couldn’t pass the opportunity to see these films in theaters, and to talk about that experience for the podcast. We talk about the meaning of Close Encounters, seeing 2001 in IMAX, and just how insane Colin Trevorrow must be to follow up ‘Jurassic World’ with ‘Book of Henry’. It’s the first of 2 bonus episodes, so stick with us during this interim between seasons, and enjoy the episode!

They hang out with returning guest Sean Menard, and talk the movies meaning, performances, and entertain a few tangents that may or may not be relevant to the topic at hand. With a newfound hope in their demon friend Garret, the guys checked out the devils favorite movie of all time, Dragonball Evolution, in hopes that it would allow them to finally leave this shitty place. Brent and Adam heap praise onto the movie, and find meaning in what little it has to offer them. They also discuss Satan’s diabolical plan of creating anime, modern-day blockbusters, and Chi-Chi’s chichi’s. It’s a pretty weird episode, even by bonus episode standards, and an ending that is sure to send Adam and Brent into new and uncharted places. S03 Episode 4: I Am David

S03 Episode 4: I Am David

This week on Director Showdown, the boys talk Paul Feig’s directorial debut ‘I Am David’, a shockingly mediocre debut effort, and probably the reason he hasn’t done another drama film since. The fellas talk about the extended fetch-quest sequence in the movie, Paul Feig’s masturbatory cameo, and why semi-competently made mediocre films just might be worse than outright-terrible movies. Adam also goes on a scary, dictatorial-esque rant at the end and kinda scares the hell out of Brent. Hope you guys are enjoying the Hell season so far, because the DS boys sure aren’t!

2ND QUICK NOTE FROM GARRET (HELL’S PODCAST PRODUCER): The boys picked up some new microphones on sale at the Hell’s Sharper Image and are still working out some kinks, so sorry for any strange recording noises or effects, we’ll work those out by next time. I feel real bad for having to ruin these good ol’ things with my dumb notes, so hopefully it’ll be the last one. Okay, sorry guys, Garret out.

S03 Episode 3: Planet of the Apes

On this special New Years Day episode of Director Showdown, Brent and Adam are talking Tim Burton’s forgotten remake oddity ‘Planet of the Apes’! Brent yet again has to argue its faults and Burton’s weaknesses, and Adam his strengths and merits. They get into the proper and correct way to utilize Mark Wahlberg, the visual choices that Burton makes in his films, and even the secret to getting into heaven! It’s a jam-packed, if slightly meandering and tangential episode, so enjoy, and don’t forget to tell your friends about the podcast!

QUICK NOTE FROM GARRET (HELL’S PODCAST PRODUCER): There is a strange audio issue from about 8 minutes to 11 minutes, where the audio skips quick moments, but it IS TEMPORARY. The issue quickly goes away and doesn’t come back, so our apologies, we’ll do our best to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Okay, bye.

On this Christmas special, Adam and Brent sat down to watch Paul Feig’s holiday classic ‘Unaccompanied Minors’! Luckily, they were blessed with some 100 proof ‘Rumble Minze’ peppermint schnapps to get through it, and maybe shouldn’t have killed most of the bottle beforehand? Anyway, the fellas talk about what a nightmare the movie is, some ideas for Tim Burton’s version of it, and try to keep their hopes up during their holiday in Hell. Enjoy the episode and we hope you have/had a great Christmas!

After quite the turn of events on the ‘Dennis the Menace’ bonus episode, the guys have ended up in the bad place! This week they talk about what Hell is actually like, how and why they are still podcasting and watching movies, and the setup for this short, 6 episode season. It’s going to be a rough one, but who would expect anything else from going to Hell?! They kick off the season with Tim Burton’s 1989 ‘Batman’, Brent talks about why he hates Tim Burton, and Adam does his best to defend the movie (poorly). It’s going to be a bit of a negative season, but the boys are sure to find the bright side (or else they’ll be stuck in Hell forever!)

They talk the most divisive Refn film yet, ‘Only God Forgives’ and the hidden layers behind the film, some wild trivia, and their personal origins with the movie. Yet again, the boys are joined by this seasons recurring character, Dennis, who will apparently plague us indefinitely. Again, we apologize profusely, as we want this to stop as much as you do, but please be patient as we look into different methods to deal with the issue. Brian tells the guys which director he prefers, they talk about their personal history with the movie, and how different (and mainstream) it is from Linklater’s other films. We had a few technical difficulties this week, hence Brent and Brian sharing a mic, and a (hopefully not too annoying) buzz during the podcast. Regardless, it’s a great, wacky episode and we hope you enjoy it!

P.S. We want to sincerely apologize for Dennis’s continued harassment and annoyances on this new season. We’re doing everything in our power to rid ourselves, and our audience, of this menace. Thank you for understanding.

Neither of the boys have seen it (which is a first for the podcast) so they have a great time unpacking their thoughts, as well as talking of growing up near Austin and the authenticity the movie captures. A synth-y new intro song! More Tom Hanks talk! Fireworks galore! It’s going to be a great season, so enjoy the first episode and watch along with the episodes!
